Torture: a controversial issueTorture is the act of inflicting severe physical or psychological pain and/or injury on a person (or animal), usually on a person physically tied up and unable to do so. defend themselves against what is done to them. It has ancient origins and still persists today. The torture debate is a controversial subject in modern society. Because it is a very complex topic, many controversial issues arise from it. For example, many question whether torture is effective in obtaining the truth, whether it affects torturers, whether it threatens the international reputation of the United States, or whether it undermines justice. Others include what counts as torture, or whether or not the United States should set an example by not torturing. The two opposing assertions on this topic would be: (a) that torture should always be illegal because it is immoral and cruel and goes against international treaties signed by the United States and against torture and inhumane treatment , and (b) yes, torture is acceptable. when needed. Why not do to terrorists what they do so well to so many others? Anti-torture voices seem defensive and incoherent. Our Constitution are the rules that guide our nation. It was written by those who looked at the world in years past and saw persecution, torture, and other crimes against humanity and believed that America is much better than that. These values have been preached throughout the world. There are certain clearly defined lines that Americans do not cross because we respect the dignity of every human being. “Preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution,” every president has promised our country under oath. Most believe that this inhumane treatment is sure to bring cruel mental torment... middle of paper ...... Literary confinements often suffer mentally from the extremes of hot and cold, forced insomnia and permanent lighting. . This experience could be so traumatic for a prisoner that they could suffer serious mental illness. While this might leave them in these conditions, it would not leave them physically suffering and could be a much more acceptable means of punishment. When there are two sides to an issue, you can usually find common ground. Solitary confinement would be an excellent response to combat torture and resolve the contradictory allegations it conveys. This way, those who believe that physically torturing these people is inhumane and goes against what our country believes and those who say that terrorists get what they deserve and should be brutally tortured, are both satisfied and these terrorists still receive their punishment..
