  • Essay / Facial Expressions - 639

Facial expressions have been studied for years and continue to be studied by researchers today. Of all the studies carried out on facial expressions, two major points of view have emerged. The first view is emotional expression, this view says that facial expressions are sporadic and come from raw emotions. Expressions only convey emotion and nothing more. The other is the behavioral ecology view; this indicates that the expression is not just about emotion, but quite the opposite. This view says that expressions are used or reinforced by the actions and expressions of those around you. This view states that it is more of a social behavior. I conducted a study containing 10 observations of other people participating in regular actions. I waited and observed their facial expressions and what might have provoked them. From there, I determined where their facial expressions aligned. I intend to compare the results and give some generalizations of my findings. I will also share any interesting things I might have found while people-watching. Then I will conclude by expressing my personal opinion on both viewpoints, judging by my results and what I actually believe. My sighting took place at a table next to Starbucks and inside USM's Cook Library. I sat down and started people-watching, trying to find students doing “student-like” everyday activities. By “being a student” I mean studying, searching for a book, writing papers, browsing the web, interacting with others, etc. As I started looking, I realized that most people seemed to have happy expressions. In fact, my study showed that about fifty percent of the people observed showed happy expressions... middle of paper ...... these facial expressions can come from pure emotion and spontaneity, as l the student who packs their bags to leave the library smiling for nothing because they have completed their task and can leave happy. On the other hand, they may occur due to interaction and social status, such as the student studying with others and having motor imitation of the smile and actions of other students. The first supports the expression point of view and the second supports the ecology point of view. In conclusion, based on my observations, I should take a view supporting both points of view. Everyone is precise in their own way. Each can be proven in its own way. I think it would be foolish to only support one when the other cannot be refuted. Both are correct and can be supported, which is why I strongly support both the expression view and the facial expression ecology view..
