As a child and teenager, he acted and sang on television and in school productions. He successfully auditioned for the television talent competition The X Factor in 2010, and the show's judges teamed him up with four other contestants to form a boy band. His parents, Johannah and Troy Austin, divorced when he was young, and he took his stepfather Mark Tomlinson's last name as his own. Tomlinson has five younger half-sisters: Georgia, Charlotte, Félicité, and twins Daisy and Phoebe. His mother and stepfather later divorced. In 2014, Tomlinson's family grew with the arrival of two half-siblings. Her mother welcomed another set of twins, Ernest and Doris, with her current husband, Daniel Deakin.
