Texas vagrancy laws prohibited Mexican immigrants from changing workplaces, forcing individuals to remain in low-level positions or risk deportation. Although discrimination was present in the work environment, Detroit's auto industries, such as Ford Motor Company, experienced racial hostility minimized by the unwritten policy of segregation of auto workers. Discrimination in the labor market varies greatly depending on location. Accessing skilled jobs was a difficult problem that many Mexican immigrants faced due to their inability to understand the English language and racial prejudice. Problems of discrimination were not limited to the workforce, but also affected the living conditions of many of these immigrants. Mexican immigrants were confined in unsanitary buildings. The rent charged to these immigrants was sometimes unfairly charged. As Mark Reisler says, in Chicago, Illinois, "the rents charged to Mexicans and blacks were generally higher than those of other immigrants for a comparable or even higher price." ยป.
