When most people think of dairy animals, they immediately think of a cow because that's what they are taught growing up. More recently, dairy goat farms have become increasingly popular as goat dairy products will continue to be a high demand product. In 2013, there were three hundred and sixty thousand dairy goats, with Wisconsin being number one with forty-six thousand dairy goats. In the United States, cow's milk is the most commonly consumed milk; but throughout the world, goat's milk is the most consumed. As a whole, milk is known as a natural source of nutrients, goat's milk is a popular alternative to cow's milk because it is easier to digest. Overall, goats are much more efficient than dairy cattle. They produce more for their size, the cost of raising them is much cheaper, and the components of goat's milk are much higher than those of any dairy cow. Goats are an animal smaller in stature than a cow; they are about one-sixth the size of an adult cow. Goats also have a longer production life than a cow; they can produce for about eight to ten years, while the average cow is only four to six years. On a daily basis, goats process up to nine pounds per day, and for their size, they produce seven percent of their own body weight per day. Comparing this average for a goat to a dairy cow which weighs approximately fourteen hundred pounds and produces eighty pounds per day; this means that cows only produce four point four percent of their body weight. Since dairy goats are smaller, they don't need as much food as a dairy cow to produce milk. Given their size, goats are slightly more efficient than cows; it takes less feed for a dairy goat to produce a gallon of milk than for a cow to produce a gallon.
