  • Essay / The Monsanto Company and Genetically Modified Organisms

The Monsanto Company is a multinational corporation founded as a chemical company in 1901 by John F. Queeny ("History of the Company"). The company is headquartered in Missouri, USA and has multiple locations worldwide in North/Central America, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia/Pacific and Africa (“ History of the company"). Monsanto was known in the past for manufacturing old controversial products such as: PCBs, Agent Orange and rBGH (Tokar 254). PCBs are chemicals used in the production of industrial lubricants, oils, coatings, and sealants that have been banned in the United States due to their extreme environmental toxicity (Tokar 254). Agent Orange is a herbicide used during the Vietnam War to defoliate fields to reveal the enemy (Tokar 254). This chemical was found to cause serious health problems to soldiers who were on missions in the treated areas (Tokar 254). rBGH is a bovine growth hormone developed by Monsanto that produces an increase in breast milk in injected cows (Tokar 254). The researchers' data showed that cows injected with rBGH had a high rate of udder infection and deformed offspring (Tokar 254). Currently, Monsanto only produces genetically modified seeds, also called transgenic seeds, and herbicides, marketed under the brand name Roundup ("Monsanto"). GMOs, genetically modified organisms, are plants or animals whose DNA is combined with genes from the DNA of other organisms, such as viruses, bacteria, plants and animals. Genetically modified organisms pass on genetic information to future generations and cannot form under natural interbreeding conditions. Over the past decade, the company's activities have expanded.
