Essay / Age and Crime - 1057
Regarding the commission of a crime, a question is often asked: Is the crime committed an adult phenomenon? The answer may not be so simple. For example, for those who are very technical, they argue that children (minors; people under 18) do not commit crimes, but commit misdemeanors and delinquencies. However, sometimes, when serious crimes are committed, a minor is accused of a crime and tried as an adult. For the sake of argument, the commission of offenses will be assimilated to the commission of crimes. Steffensmeier and Streifel, citing Parmelee, Quetelet Sutherland and Cressey, assert that "involvement in crime declines with age", therefore, the older a person gets, the less likely they are to commit a crime (1991, p. 869) . As many have argued at times, age is a factor in the commission of a crime; however, do age and gender influence each other? According to Steffensmeier and Streifel (1991), several debates have taken place regarding age, gender and crime. For example, some authors believe that there is no gender difference in different age groups, while others argue that there is a difference (Steffensmeier & Streifel, 1991, p. 869). "Bullying is a component of antisocial and rule-breaking behavior" and is very "popular" among children, but is it an indicator of adult criminality (Sourander, Brunstein Klomek, Kumpulainen, Puustjärvi, Elonheimo, Ristkari , Tamminen, Moilanen, Piha and Ronning, 2011, p. Sourander et al also state that “studies have found a strong and consistent relationship between bullying and involvement in violent behavior” (2011, p. 1212). . Findings from a study of 5,351 children included frequent bullies (9% of the sample were bullies...... middle of article...... & Dhami, MK (2010) .
