  • Essay / And Then There Were None - 498

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, published by Washington Square Press, is considered by most critics to be her masterpiece. After publishing almost eighty books, this was the one she was truly most proud of. For what? Mainly because critics said it sold more copies than Shakespeare and the Bible. However, Christie has much more to be proud of in this novel. With an exceptional murder mystery/plot, combined with a dark and enigmatic setting involving many deranged guests; we can see that she has accomplished a lot in this novel. Ten guests are invited to a mysterious island called "Indian Island". Each guest received invitations signed by people they had met before. Once the visitors arrived on the island and became acquainted with each other, they discovered that their host, A.N. Owen, (Unknown) had not yet arrived. At dinner, a strange voice was heard, accusing each of them of murder, and of which they were all guilty. This is the rising action of the story. One by one, each guest is killed by the anonymous murderer according to a famous nursery rhyme. As more people are killed, one by one, the group narrows down the list of suspects. Hence the definition of the classic “Who Done It?” detective novel. The characters in And Then There Were None are the ones that bring the book to life.Because this novel follows the theme of "Who Done It", there are the few obvious characters. 1) The inspector, always trying to make an accusation as to the identity of the murderer (of course, never correct). 2) The Doctor, Devon Island's answer to the question no one ever asked. 3) The old married couple (Mr. + Mrs. Rogers), always passionate about others, until a guest discovers a strange secret. 4) The murderer (Justice Wargrave), finally the guest whose portrait is the most obvious, until he dies (then comes back to life). This person always remains discreet until the last moment when he reveals that he is a raging, psychopathic and cold-blooded killer. 5) The innocent victims, of course, what story would be complete without the sad stories of innocent lives being massacred. One or two of these characters are always the ones you expect first, and are always at the crime scene...how convenient. And Then There Were None is indeed one of the best books I have read..
