Essay / Service Learning - 1611
The Society for Experiential Education defines service learning as “any carefully monitored service experience in which a student has intentional learning goals and actively reflects on what he or she learns throughout experience” (Staton 1). Service learning is a great opportunity to gain additional learning experiences while experiencing the community around the college campus. “Service-learning allows students to apply what they learn from their instructors, peers, and readings to real tasks that take place outside the four walls of the classroom while simultaneously helping students others” (Staton 1). Universities use service learning to extend beyond the classroom and provide students with experiences that will benefit them in the future. Service learning offers students some fundamental aspects of life that simply cannot be taught in the classroom. Service learning is a very useful tool for delving deeper into classroom topics into the real world. There are many reasons why universities should integrate service learning into their curriculum. One of the benefits of service learning for college degree programs is that it will reduce the price of credit hours. Many universities have implemented free learning credits, which will appeal to students when they make the decision to attend school. And believe me, as a student, the cheaper the credit hour, the more attractive the school. Another very beneficial aspect of service learning in degree programs is that it gives students a taste of the “real world.” "Service-learning allows students to apply what they learn to real-world problems, become more involved in the community surrounding campus, and develop their careers...... middle of paper ......nication” (Staton 3). Students in these classrooms truly benefit from the additional communication skills taught by college students. Service learning is a program that many universities across the country have turned to to enhance their curriculum. It provides many great opportunities for students to get out into the community and gain more than just a “college education.” Students who have participated in service learning feel that they have become well-rounded human beings and have a taste of what it means to function in the real world. Another important aspect of service learning is that not only students benefit from it. Both the university and the surrounding community are rewarded by the program. Service learning is a great program that can be integrated into any subject offered by a university..
