Before social media and cell phones, people could get away with much more than they can today. Coverage may come from media outlets such as the local news or simply from someone posting it on a social site where it can be viewed. Social media use and how it affects everyone is different for different people. Social media makes it very effective and easy to create social networks and interact with others. Before social media and the Internet, there weren't many ways to communicate other than mail and telephone. There was a time when AOL and its slow dial-up service was the only Internet there was. Many social networks offer people the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and acquaintances, make new friends, exchange ideas, share content and photos, and many other activities.
