Essay / Examples of father-son relationship at night by Elezer...
In the novel “Night” by Eliezer Wiesel, he depicts the life of a father and his son passing through the concentration camp of the Second War worldwide. Both Eliezer and his father are taken from their homes, where they would endure inhumane and harsh conditions in the camps. The difficult conditions cause the relationship between Eliezer and his father to change. During their stay in the camps, Eliezer Wiesel and his father experience a reversal of their roles. Upon entering the concentration camps, Eliezer and his father demonstrate a normal father-son relationship. In a normal father-son relationship, the father protects and gives advice to the son, and the son depends on his father. Eliezer and his father demonstrate this relationship to the extreme from the beginning of their time in the camp. Eliezer reveals his childish dependence upon entering the camp. Eliezer displays this dependence during the first selection by stating: “The stick was pointing to the left. I wanted to see where they would send my father first. If he had gone to the right, I would have run after him (Night 26-32).” Eliezer's determination to stay with his father was constantly present. Eliezer thought about a time he spent in the camp and the only thing he could think about was not losing his father in the camp. Eliezer also needs his father's protection during their time in the concentration camps. Unwittingly demanding this protection, Eliezer remembers: “I kept walking, my father holding my hand” (Night 29). Eliezer continues to show his need for his father's presence. Eliezer's actions and thoughts reflect his dependence on his father in the camp. Later, during their time at the camp, Eliezer and his father develop a peer relationship. Both m...... middle of paper...... he was still a child. As Eliezer's father continues to show his dependence on his son, Eliezer grows more into the role of parent. Eliezer expends his own food and energy to care for his father. Eliezer discovers that even though his father can no longer protect him, Eliezer still cares about his father and wants the best for him. This is an example of what one would do in parenting in a relationship. Eliezer has now taken on the role of the father, while his father has taken a reverse direction and become the dependent child. I find that the relationship between Eliezer and his father demonstrates a change in roles during their time in the concentration camp. The dark conditions created a void for all relationships within the camp. Eliezer Night's book depicts the lives of a father and son going through an immeasurable life, suffering and testing their bond as a family..
