Essay / Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe - 1060
Things Fall Apart by Chinua AchebeThe last chapter of “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe ends with the phrase: “He had already chosen the title of the book, after careful reflection: The pacification of the primitive tribes of the lower Niger. » This refers to the title chosen by the district commissioner for a book he wrote whose main subject is said to be the African people, the Igbo tribe in particular. From the title itself, it can be said that the writer has an unfavorable bias about it. But come to think of it, there are many factors why it would be impossible for the district commissioner to write an accurate description of the culture he is trying to write about. How can he do it when he knows very little about the subject? How can he do this when he writes from the point of view of a European colonialist? Let's focus on his selection of words for the working title of his book. The word “pacification” is very condescending in nature. This gives the impression, especially to those who do not know the realities of the Igbo people, that the latter are barbaric and uncivilized. This can make them seem like a child who will probably wander around an unfamiliar place without any sense of direction if his parents decide to leave him alone. We are not saying here that the Igbo people lived in perfect harmony in pre-colonial times. They may have had internal misunderstandings, which is completely normal in a community. But the point here is that the Igbo people do not need to be pacified because they were already living in peace generally before the arrival of the colonialists. In fact, the natives may have felt more distress and unease upon their arrival, especially the district...... middle of paper...... district commissioner. He symbolizes an arrogant colonialist, a foreigner who thinks he understands perfectly a culture that in reality he knows very little. He is a colonialist who, like the Reverend James Smith, demonstrates intolerance and disrespect for indigenous customs and traditions. A white man who doesn't even speak the native Igbo language. The one who gives the title “The pacification of the primitive tribes of the Lower Niger” to his ethnographic study of local African tribes “after careful consideration”. It symbolizes a colonialist who reports on colonized cultures in an area that best suits their interests. Usually, their stories are characterized by their dehumanizing and demeaning attitudes towards their subject..
