  • Essay / My experience of attending a jazz concert

Attending a jazz concert for the first time was a great experience; it was performed at the Feddersen Recital Hall in Mt. Sac on October 19, 2019. The musicians who participated were Bob Sheppard who alternated between alto and soprano saxophone, Jeff Ellwood who played tenor saxophone, Dean Koba who played the drums, and Katie Thiroux who played double bass. The double bass was the instrument that mainly caught my attention, the melody and rhythm of it were perfect, it made me want to follow the rhythm throughout the concert. The syncopation and swing, the bent notes, the modes and the improvisation kept a good rhythm throughout the concert. Say no to plagiarism. One of the songs performed was “Optimal Propensity.” This song started with some low tones in the harmony with the introduction of saxophone and drums. The song after starting slowly transitioned into a more consonant harmony, which then remained for the rest of the song. The rhythm of this song was happy in some places in the song and more high pitched and relaxed in other places as the tempo changed and the notes of the saxophone helped change the melody of it. Additionally, the second song performed was "Have You". Have you met Mrs. Jones? which contained a romantic melody. As the bass and saxophone alternated in rhythm, the passion of the song motivated everyone to get in rhythm with it. The regular melody seemed to become much faster, like a heartbeat, at the climax of the song. The sounds got louder and louder until all the instruments met at the top with a bang, then changed the dynamics again. Another song played was "Did It Have To Be You?". For me, it was a romantic song from the start of the first note. The song started with a crescendo going from very soft to very loud, then stayed that way until the end when the pattern reversed. The melody was very sweet; it made me feel the gentle and delicate rhythm which immediately caught my full attention. Moreover, after attending this amazing concert full of wonderful music, I was happy and had an unforgettable day. It was an experience of a lifetime. I listened to a genre of music I had never heard before, I felt like I was missing some of the real music. Without this mission, I wouldn't know how awesome it is to attend a jazz concert. The melody and rhythm are memorable. Now I'm looking for jazz concerts online because I'm ready to continue experiencing the magnificence of jazz music that began in the 20th century. The audience seemed to be made up of students who were there for the same reasons as me. However, the other audience members who were part of it were older groups and they were only there hoping for a good performance and a good time. The audience always gave a warm applause ovation after the end of each song, which means the audience enjoyed the performance. Keep in mind: this is just a sample.
