  • Essay / How to Prevent Teen Depression and Suicide

You may have heard someone say the famous saying: “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me . » You may also have heard: “I am rubber and you are glue, everything you say bounces off me and sticks to you.” Unfortunately, these words are not as realistic as they seem. Studies show that 5,000 teens commit suicide each year, and American society often ignores the signs leading to teen suicide. Then they notice it's too late. Unfortunately, we say, "We didn't see the signs," and we blame society, but we don't realize that we are society. This probably hurt us more than anything else. Bullying can push someone to their breaking point, leading them to believe they are not worth it and to think about suicide. Statistics show that suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people aged 15 to 19. About 5,000 teenagers commit suicide each year in the United States alone. Most teenagers have thought about suicide. Even if it doesn't seem like it, most teens try to call for help. Depression, anxiety and bullying are the main causes of suicide. If someone is suicidal, you can notice it by their sad mood or feelings. They may lose interest in activities they once enjoyed. As if their favorite sport was no longer their top priority. You may notice that they don't talk to their friends like they used to. They began to isolate themselves from others. Instead of spending time with their family, they will find an excuse to leave or go to their room to be alone. Teenagers who habitually joke or talk about suicide are suicidal. Unfortunately, many teenagers intentionally harm themselves. Depressed teens who have been bullied or are... middle of paper ...... immediately help with depression and get help to stop the bullying. Bullying that leads to depression can be fatal for the victim if left untreated. So, not only can depression lead to suicide, but bullying or pushing someone to their breaking point will also be a main factor. It's not just the suicidal person's fault, it's also society's fault. Imagine if you were that person. Wouldn't you like someone to help you? There is special help to prevent suicide, but it still happens. If you notice signs of depression in yourself or someone you know, seek help immediately to prevent something from happening. And above all, think before you speak. To you, your words may seem heartless, but to others, they can really hurt. No one should give up their own life because of something you find “humorous.” Don't be the reason someone makes a permanent decision for a temporary situation.
