  • Essay / Harmonious Culture in Little Saigon - 1319

Nowadays, many migrants come together and create their own small place to house their culture. Because their cultures are more of a mixture of multiple cultures than traditional, they are different from each other. However, even though a mixed culture seems like a unique non-traditional situation, it equates to a strong culture. In history Culture is ordinary, says Raymond William, “each human society has its own form, its own objectives, its own meanings. Every human society expresses them, in institutions, as well as in the arts and learning” (93). I visited Little Saigon, Westminster, where there was a small Vietnamese immigrant town. This small company has built strong, unexpected identities by creating numerous Vietnamese business stores and other cultural materials. The people of Little Saigon constructed and shaped their own mixed cultures and identities by accepting new observations and learning of different American and Asian cultures. In personal relationships, Vietnamese Americans in Little Saigon show that they are divided into first generation, second generation. , and 1.5 generations. When I entered the Vietnamese pho restaurant, the waitresses are all old Vietnamese women. They didn't welcome us because they spoke poor English and didn't want to communicate with us. They only said “hello” to me and tried to speak with facial expressions and body language. I realized that they were the first generation to come from Vietnam at an old age and therefore did not know enough English. Not only at the restaurant, but also at the Asian Garden Mall and other stores I went to, there were mostly first generation workers. I had a lot of difficulty communicating with the workers, so I felt unwelcome or uncomfortable middle of paper......at the same time. Because they try to have both identities, Little Saigon also has American and Vietnamese cultures that have reconciled. Vietnamese Americans in Little Saigon manifest their unique identities in many ways, such as personal relationships, cultural artifacts, and material experiences. Little Saigon shows who they really are and what they have. They are influenced by American and Asian cultures and make Little Saigon a mixed community, which tries to maintain its own history and culture at the same time. I think Little Saigon is like "Little America" because the United States has the melting pot myth that many different cultures blend together to form one big harmonious culture. Little Saigon itself has harmonious cultures that reflect the diverse identities and diversity of the Vietnamese American community..
