  • Essay / Reflection on Empowerment - 650

Empowerment is the authorization of decision-making responsibility by a leader towards his follower. This goal can be achieved by encouraging active participation and sharing the decision-making process. To me, empowerment means a sense of belonging and a sense of meaning. From the perspective of a staff member of an organization, it helps me explore my full potential and build my self-confidence. It also helps create a positive and dynamic work environment. I experienced good accountability when I worked as an intern at Johnson and Johnson. My supervisor constantly recognized and rewarded my efforts. For example, I got paid time off after working overtime until midnight for a full week. Good morale has also been built within the team since we usually have lunch with the whole team, regardless of our position. The interns had the opportunity to speak with the group's brand manager and the company's marketing director. It was actually a really good team building opportunity because we could get to know our teammates not only as a colleague but also as a friend. Building a good team helps to develop our sense of belonging to the company and the meaning of work. I also felt confident because I had a high level of ownership of tasks. I was allowed to participate in decision-making and contribute meaningfully to a professional task. I felt that I was growing professionally within the company. I currently work part-time at a consulting firm, where I have experienced poor accountability. The supervisor is usually very busy and does not have time to express his or her requirements for a task clearly enough. As a result, employees are often confused about what they should do and do not even have the opportunity to clarify their tasks with the supervisor...... middle of paper ...... only for people high level and fallen stars. If the stars in the middle are well trained, they will have a very good chance of becoming the next super star. Conversely, if they are not guided effectively, they risk falling back. During my exchange semester in Finland, I discovered that Finland adopted a very particular strategy in terms of education. Teachers do not aim to produce elites. Rather, they try to ensure that everyone in the class understands the course content. If a student performs significantly better than his classmates, the teacher will give him additional readings after class instead of praising him in front of the whole class to put pressure on other students. This is a good example of how to effectively care for team members of different performances. I think this is one of the reasons why Finland has the best education system in the world..
