  • Essay / 1984 by George Orwell - 696

To live a free life is to be able to freely express and evoke one's own thoughts and feelings. And in the modern world, it is simply improbable to imagine a world in which this would not exist. When a party overwhelms its citizens with the thoughts and feelings of the party and forces citizens to believe that their opinions are always simply wrong or considered a betrayal of the party, then the human mind is programmed to please the party. Psychological manipulation, in George Orwell's novel 1984, is used as one of the main party control tactics. The party uses various forms of psychological manipulation within society, such as the influence of TV screens to instill fear in citizens and create a lack of privacy within society. Second, the party uses psychological manipulation of children by inducing them from a young age into groups favorable to Big Brother. And also, the party uses their sexual desires and pleasures to dehumanize what would be a pleasurable act, until it becomes an obligation to further please the party. Due to the dehumanizing effects of psychological manipulation, manipulating the way one thinks is the most dangerous means of control. Therefore, in the 1984 novel, the manipulation methods, characters and situations show the dangers of this control. Firstly, manipulative methods are used throughout the novel, some quite distorted, others quite realistic and tied to real world events. Although Orwell's methods depicted in the novel may be distorted, the relevance of his fabricated methods is not only to attract the reader but rather to show the maximum ramifications of the methods used. In modern life, screens are not constantly monitoring everything we do or say, there is... middle of paper...... a second thought about one's child's actions. Children inevitably belonged to the “Youth League” where they were transformed into “ungovernable little savages [and this made them] have no tendency to rebel against the party” (Orwell 24.26). As children grow up, they are placed in different organizations organized by the party to ultimately create the ideal citizens. This creates controversy between parents and their children, as children are increasingly willing to turn their backs on their parents to gain party approval. Since this teaches children from a young age to dehumanize anyone who opposes the party, this information is all they know. Therefore, trying to teach these children to respect and treat people, because they are human, becomes more and more difficult as the generations pass. Ultimately, a brainwashed and party-friendly population will be created.
