Essay / Violation of library standards - 937
How would you describe the average setting of a library? Libraries are generally serene and calm. These are neat places where you can rent books, relax and read, write an essay, or study for an exam. The norm or expected behavior in a library is respectful, calm, and serious behavior. Usually you stay alone. You don't visit the local library to meet up with an old friend or to get into mischief. For this mission, I chose to violate the library standard. I chose to do it subtly to avoid making a big scene or getting kicked out. By violating the norm, I displayed deviant behavior. This is any behavior that violates the norms applicable in a given situation. I portrayed someone who could be described as a “climber” or a stalker. The role I played involved a few variations of the same general idea. My actions always involved staring. The goal of my experiment was to get a response from each of my targeted subjects. Before my experience, I was really nervous. It went against my shy, laid-back exterior. I thought I would be too nervous to carry out the plan or that I would break character right away and laugh. I couldn't bring a friend because I knew it would be even harder to keep my cool. I'll give some specific feedback I received. In the first round, I walked over to a row of computers and sat next to a woman who looked to be around thirty years old. She was typing a letter or paper so I decided to run with her. I opened Word and started typing as fast as I could while stealing quick glances at him several times. I knew how ridiculous I looked. As soon as I saw her look back out of the corner of my eye, I lost control and laughed. I told him about my mission and we ...... middle of paper ...... violation of norms determine if the act is "deviant". According to this view, deviance depends on the reactions of others. My violation of the norms is considered a deviant act based on the reactions I received. A negative response or reaction to a behavior means that the behavior is deviant. Behavior considered “normal” will not provoke a reaction. In summary, my violation of the standard was simple. I violated the library norm by staring at and imitating strangers. The goal was to generate responses. This shows the need and importance of standards in society. My violation of standards is just one of countless examples. It's hard for me to say what a society without social norms would look like. This could take different forms, positive and negative. Norms are essential to balance and order. They allow us to have expectations of others and to understand what is expected of ourselves..
