  • Essay / Reason and Wit in The Post Office by Rabindranath Tagore

Reason is an integral part of human intelligence while a sharp mind is an essential ingredient of the human soul. Some people are dominated by reason while others allow both reason and spirit to guide them through their lives. For the rest of the people, their mind is the dominant factor that directs them and moves them forward. The force that guides a person's life also makes a statement about that person's nature and characteristics. In Rabindranath Tagore's text, The Post Office, the way in which the text operates beyond a literal level is clear from the text's detailed description that what opens the doors of reason that hold people back is is a person's immortal and free spirit and imagination, which flies. Those who are pure in heart may have a kind of mind and imagination that is willing to break down barriers; others have the courage to break down, including the doors of reason. Amal is the one who is pure in heart and has a kind of spirit and imagination, who is ready to break barriers, few others have the courage to break, including the barriers of reason. This is made clear by how he continually expresses a desire to go out despite everyone warning him against it. At one point, Amal says, “I wish I was a squirrel!” --that would be lovely. Uncle, why don't you let me go? (Tagore, 5). This demonstrates that he opens the door to reason with his mind despite the constant reminder of reason. In another example, Amal goes on to point out that he does not want to be educated, that he “prefers to go and see everything that exists” (Tagore, 5). It is a statement that although others expect Amal to follow logic and be an educated man, he wishes to experience the world through his...... middle of paper. .it is only that they can open the doors of reason. , but they can also rise above mortality and other associated barriers to existence by reveling in the small aspects and joys of life. When a person lets their mind take control, it helps them live life to the fullest, no matter how long they live. It also causes this person to say “no” to restrictions and confinement. Amal's life was short but he did not let the thought of death cloud his mind and enjoyed life while he could. Works Cited Tagore, Rabindranath.
