Essay / Special Offender Case Study - 1031
Sex offenders may be placed in separate prison units or may apply to be placed in a unit. If a convicted sex offender chooses to remain in the general population, he or she may be required to sign a legal waiver of liability. Fellow inmates often refer to pedophiles as “Chesters,” “tree jumpers,” and “short eyes” (James, 2009). These types of inmates are often targeted by fellow inmates and can lead to beatings, rape, extortion and death. Prison staff do their best to protect these inmates, but cannot be everywhere and at all times to protect them. The prison hierarchy places child molesters and snitches at the bottom rung. A study conducted by the University of Alaska Anchorage found that more than 80% of inmates reported some sort of childhood sexual trauma (Langworthy et al., 1998). Many of these inmates never faced their abuse, making convicted sex offenders a target of revenge for what happened in their own childhoods. Treatment for deviant sex offenders may help them mentally, but their physical safety still remains at stake during their stay.
