    Language is an important part of our lives. I remember when I arrived in the United States, I spoke a little English. I went to school to improve my language, reading and writing skills; even now I am learning my second language, without English I can't survive in this new environment. Now I'm raising my own children and I want them to learn this important skill, this privilege of knowing a second language, the language of their parents and grandparents. Looking at studies with bilingual children, research shows how important it is for a child to learn a second language. Raising a child bilingual is an advantage because it improves social skills, academic skills, introduces the child to a different culture and prepares for the future.
