Language is an important part of our lives. I remember when I arrived in the United States, I spoke a little English. I went to school to improve my language, reading and writing skills; even now I am learning my second language, without English I can't survive in this new environment. Now I'm raising my own children and I want them to learn this important skill, this privilege of knowing a second language, the language of their parents and grandparents. Looking at studies with bilingual children, research shows how important it is for a child to learn a second language. Raising a child bilingual is an advantage because it improves social skills, academic skills, introduces the child to a different culture and prepares for the future. The first advantage is better school and academic success. Studies show that bilingual children have better reading and writing skills and can also learn a third language easily.
