Confederate RacismThe Confederate flag is a famous symbol of the South's side in the American Civil War. The controversy surrounding this flag has received a lot of media attention given the deep emotion and offense of some people. Southerners consider themselves personally affected. A majority of supporters say banning the Confederate flag strips them of their heritage, referencing the South's role in the American Civil War. People who do not support retaining the Confederate flag, such as non-Southerners, African Americans, and many others, argue that although the flag is a symbol of Southern history, much of the Southern history includes racial segregation, lynchings, and slavery. In fact, the Confederacy's goal during the Civil War was to ensure that slavery remained an institution in America. The man who created the Confederate flag, William T. Thompson, said this about the heritage symbol: "We as a people struggle to maintain the heavenly supremacy of the white man over the inferior or colored race ; a white flag would thus be emblematic of our cause” (Miessler par. 3). This alone makes it clear what the goal of the Confederacy was. It only takes one sentence to show that this “heritage” that many wish to preserve and cherish has never been harmless. The history that the Nazi flag represents is well known to be racist and responsible for the deaths of millions of innocent people. When someone looks at the Nazi flag, they remember concentration camps, gas chambers and starving and sick people. When someone looks at the hood and coat of the Klu Klux Klan, they are reminded of the lynchings, the murders and the place it still holds in today's society. With the Confederate flag associated with a member of the KKK, it is hard to deny that the history the flag carries is undoubtedly
