    In "Where Are You From, Where Are You From" by Joyce Carol Oates Connie dreams of Arnold Friend and Ellie coming to it to illustrate the theme of temptation and wanting what you can't have. Throughout the short story, you can tell when Connie may be dreaming by the qualities of the people and things around her and how she perceives the world at that time. There are several indications that the moment of Arnold Friend's arrival signifies the beginning of Connie's daydream. For example, the sensations Connie felt when she first met Arnold were that "she raised her shoulders and inhaled her breath with the pure pleasure of being alive" (Joyce Carol Oates, page 1) , which were the same sensations she felt when she first met Arnold. masturbating alone at home when Arnold arrives (Page 2). Similar connections can be made to Arnold being aware of everything Connie knows in his mind. He knows her name, who her family is, where they are at that time, and the names of her friends (pages 4 and 6). When his own name is broken, "Arnold Friend" becomes "An O"....
