  • Essay / Sounds of Silence: Gordon Hempton - 1440

Our world is full of sounds, whether it's birds whistling in the morning, leaves crunching under a squirrel's feet, or the wind swirling around of you. Gordon Hempton doesn't take these sounds for granted like we do; he cherishes and records them all as they happen. In 2003, he suddenly lost his hearing and it fully recovered, giving him a new love for the sounds of our world. This music video shows Gordon recording and capturing the sounds of nature and trying to make a difference by saving the natural quiet of national parks and inspiring people to listen. This video is narrated in the third person, with first-person accounts from Gordon himself. If this topic was something that the viewer was personally interested in, then I think it would elicit an emotional response, but in my case, it doesn't. The camera focuses on two subjects: Gordon and nature. The subjects and objects filmed are chosen in order to create the most effective sequence and create the strongest visual image for the viewer. Since video focuses on sound, the thing the camera focuses on is usually the object making the sound. For example, thirty seconds into the video, you can hear the snow crunching under Gordon's feet. The visual aspect that accompanies this sound is a close-up of his feet walking through the snow. Also, as we can hear the snow melting, a video of the ice melting accompanies it. Overall, the majority of shots in the video are B-roll, focusing on nature and nothing very important or specific. I think this lack of visual interest in the B-roll really hurts the video as a whole. Because there was nothing specific to focus my attention on, I... middle of paper ... it's slightly unnoticeable. There is no strong climax or action, but the video has a dramatic curve. The rising action occurs as Gordon moves toward the quiet zone. The climax would be when he comes in and says, “…this is the last thing I’ll say.” » The falling action would take place when he leaves, and she cuts to another setting. Due to the culmination of the visual elements and cinematographic techniques, this video story serves as an example of an effective and fluid video story. There were moments where the videographer could have improved and created a stronger piece, but the majority of the video is powerful and conveys a strong message. The videographer used appropriate shots, angles and tilts to share Gordon Hempton's message and passion. This video really helps show the silence and natural noise that goes unnoticed and how important it is to protect them..
