Essay / Office Ergonomics Essay - 1499
Background: Office ergonomics, like other ergonomics disciplines, all emerged in the 1940s, during the World War ( McCormick and Saunders, 1993). Difficulties arise from the inability of soldiers to handle technical equipment produced for war due to physical incompatibility or lack of understanding of the equipment and when technological advances were transferred to the civilian population after war, the same problems of incompatibility of man-machine systems were encountered. observed. This led to a study by military personnel, academics, psychologists, and physiologists, all seeking solutions to the complications arising from the operation of the machines (Kumar and Cohn, 2013). In 1949, the term ergonomics was coined from the Greek words “ergo”. ” meaning work and “nomos” meaning law at a meeting attended by eminent psychologists and physiologists. The same group later formed the Ergonomic Research Society (ERS), which was the first organization in the world to study ergonomics. The ERS then evolved into the Ergonomics Society (ES) and then into the current Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (IEHF) (Omerley, 2103). Office ergonomics is part of this generalized evolution of ergonomics since it is a recognized discipline among the fields of ergonomics. Office ergonomics primarily concerns the office setting or environment and helps to avoid injuries and tailor the work to the person rather than the person to the work. Development of Office Ergonomics Office ergonomics was developed with the aim of improving the already good working environment (Lauren, 2006). This helps people operating machines to give the best results from their work while maximizing production. As production increases, the risk of injury is greatly increased...... middle of paper ......committee's solution solution. The cost of workers' compensation has also been reduced by 10%. This saved Quad Graphics money that would be used for compensation and valuable days that would have been lost due to worker absences (Lauren, 2006).Conclusion/OpinionErgonomics is a great tool for increase worker productivity and improve working conditions at workplaces. Any organization that incorporates ergonomics into its operations saves a lot of money in lost time and workers' compensation. Organizations should not wait until their employees are injured or ill to introduce ergonomics. Instead, they should adopt it from the start. By doing so, workers have confidence in the organization because they feel cared for and will therefore give their best at work. As ergonomics becomes a way of life in all organizations, everything is changing for the better.
