Essay / The Crucible Plot Summary - 1138
Proctor begins to berate her, stating that she is paid to help his wife, not to spend time in town. Mary, however, insists that her work is of the utmost importance, that she is doing God's will. In a seemingly light-hearted moment, she gives Elizabeth a doll, something she worked on all day during tryouts. Then, with a very important air, she tells John that she will no longer be commanded by him, that she is doing God's work and is therefore a child. Furious, John begins to threaten her, at which point she is terrified and blurts out that Elizabeth's name will be brought up during the trials that day. Mary further explains to the shocked Procters that she saved Elizabeth's life and insisted to the judge that there was no witchcraft in their lives.
