Essay / Review of Group Work Practices of Girls United Youth Center
This article will review the group work practice of the pilot group work program launched by the Youth Center (Jurong) — “Girls United” under four angles: (a) Model of group work practice, (b) leadership style and co-leadership, (c) activity planning, and (d) group work approach. This article will end with my “Personal Reflection on Group Dynamics”. Group Work Practice Model As mentioned in our group report, Girls United is a group work practice that combines both the catch-up model and the reciprocal model. However, in my opinion, the remedial model may not be suitable for the program, as it emphasizes its usefulness in eliminating unfavorable conditions of individuals and changing their behavior, but this is rather unrealistic to achieve in 8 weekly sessions, and the fact that members can have very different problems and severity adds to the difficulty of implementation. (Konopka, 1963) As the sessions are limited in time, it is more appropriate for the social worker to focus on strengthening the members by providing them with information and skills, so that they have coping skills. stronger adaptation even when the group ends. (Robert Glass, 1968) However, I recognize the drawbacks of this model: it rejects the diagnosis and treatment of individual problems, making it difficult to assess whether the sessions are successful in helping girls with psychological problems. (Whittaker, 1970) Therefore, I suggest that in addition to formulating the group based on a reciprocal model, the social worker could identify individuals who need special attention during activities and then provide support. help through therapeutic interventions once the program is completed. (Friedlander, 1958) So, in the course of writing the paper, we will decide democratically the direction in which we should go. Although no explicit rules were set, we implicitly agreed to take a democratic approach to decision-making because we trusted each other, we all want to achieve the same goal, and we all have high standards of dedication. Because of this unspoken agreement, none of us are afraid to give suggestions and feedback. I think majoring in social work really helped us a lot in understanding where everyone was coming from. Although we have very different personality traits, our values and beliefs are very similar and we all have a basic understanding of how to work as a team. To summarize, friendship drives our team dynamic, and it is not only functional but also socially beneficial for us. “Coming together is a start. Staying together is progress. Working together is a success. ”
