Jefferson succeeded in restoring unity and setting a bipartisan agenda for government, while inspiring Americans to achieve a higher ideal and standard for themselves. Jefferson's inaugural address continues to be a major theme of political ideology and is cited as "the greatest political speech of his career." His rhetoric effectively restored unity. Jefferson, “beautifully designed it to claim common ground after a bitter and divisive campaign.” To its staunch supporters, the speech was glorified and to its opponents, it was seen as a welcome concession to the Federalist Party.
