SUCCESSFUL SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION PRACTICES As the concept of sustainable development education has gained global prominence, many schools and teachers are eager to implement implement sustainable development education in the classroom. However, teachers often do not really know how to teach sustainable development: they rarely have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in this area and, therefore, may not have much experience in developing of sustainable development education programs. This study presents some of the ways teachers are successfully implementing sustainability education in sites where sustainability is a shared goal among educators and community members. The authors examined teacher practice in eight schools in Victoria, Australia, focusing in particular on place-based sustainable education practices and relationships between teachers, students and community members. The research was conducted as part of a longitudinal study examining teacher professionals. sustainability education in Victorian primary schools. In a previous sustainability mapping survey in the Gippsland region of Victoria, researchers identified eight primary schools with active sustainability education programs, and they invited these schools to participate in a study by hosting teachers in initial training for a three-week internship. The schools in the sample were a mix of large and small rural and regional schools, including one Catholic school and five state schools. No schools were located near a major metropolitan area. The researchers used semi-structured focus groups with a total of 5 principals and 16 teachers to understand how the school administrator and teachers thought about sustainability as well as the practices they used amidst the article......and explore new ideas, leading their own explorations of sustainability.THE RESULT:Successful sustainability education programs integrate and situate lessons within the local social and environmental framework, and their methods of Teaching encourages creativity and experiential learning. Strategies that educators can use in their classrooms include (1) engaging students in the physical environment that surrounds schools, (2) working across disciplines to help students understand the historical and ecological relationships that constitute local places , (3) form partnerships with community members and groups, and (4) pursue creative and inquiry-based projects. There is no standardized formula for education for sustainable development; rather, it must arise from local conditions, student interests, and conceptual connections that emerge from each learning encounter..
