Elizabethan Settlement After Elizabeth acceded to the throne and became the ruling monarch of England, she wanted to ease tensions between Protestants and Catholics. Elizabeth decided on a compromise between the two religions, a compromise that would have the characteristics of both, this new religion was called Anglicanism. The factors that led Elizabeth to make this decision were her personal religious preferences, the opinions of the Marian bishops, and the advice given to her by parliament. But this compromise had consequences. These include Protestant and Catholic discontent, the Vestiarian controversy, and Catholic opposition to the colony. After Henry's death in 1547, Edward, aged 10, came to the throne. The English Church became increasingly Protestant in its worship and doctrine under the Protestant Lord Somerset. Mary succeeded to the throne after Edward's death in 1553. Mary was a devout Catholic and saw it as her mission to restore Catholicism to England. To do this she primarily used persecution, burning Protestants for not renouncing their beliefs, these actions turned many English people against Catholicism. Elizabeth wanted to create a religion for all of England, one that would hopefully make both religious groups in England happy. One of the factors that led to the Elizabethan settlement was his own personal religious preferences. She did not favor one religion over the other, but she did quote: “There is one Christ, Jesus Christ, one faith. Everything else is just a quarrel over trifles.” She tried to make the English people happy by not persecuting a group like Mary before her. However, even after the Elizabethan settlement, the pressure had not dissipated because of the two religions in England, Protestant and Catholic. were unhappy with the compromise. Elizabeth had pursued the settlement because her religious preferences, creating a unified country and a parliament that supported it, impelled her to do so. This settlement however had disastrous consequences as Elizabeth was now under constant threat, many Englishmen opposed her while two great powers watched from a distance.
