  • Essay / Virtue and Virtue Ethics - 863

Virtue is the moral excellence that an engineer must uphold in order to achieve a sense of accomplishment and virtuous gratification from one's actions. More specifically, virtue ethics emphasizes the individual character of action. Virtue relates to engineering by allowing engineers to practice their intellectual virtues that arise from learning and their ethical virtues that arise from habit. Virtue ethics emphasizes that it is who you are that matters and that a person's character and moral habits should be valued. Aristotle believed that one could achieve a virtuous state when one's potential was actualized. He believed that “the essential nature of things lies not in their cause (or their beginning) but in their end (telos)”. This means that a Virtue or excellence is a “golden mean between two extremes of defect and excess”. Virtue is the golden mean between the two extremes and these means are: courage, temperance, prudence and justice. Aristotle also specified two distinct areas of virtue: virtues of character and virtues of thought. The virtues of character are a means "between two extremes of defect and excess", also known as the cardinal virtues. An example of this character is courage, it is the golden mean between cowardice and impertinence. The virtues of thought specialize in the wisdom and intelligence of each person. An example of this virtue is techne, or skill; it is a person's ability to write poetry and essays skillfully. I have acquired certain virtues throughout my time here at Texas A&M University. Throughout my time at this university, I acquired two of the main virtues of character. I developed the virtue of temperance by being neither lenient nor insensitive. Throughout my life, I have realized the importance of maintaining a perfect means of pleasure. One should not indulge in things such as video games, food and sleeping. I have discovered that one must maintain a good regular diet and sleep schedule to achieve this virtue. Additionally, I realized that one must be fair and give to the people around them. Justice is the idea of giving and giving to those in need. During my time here at A&M, I have volunteered and given my time for those in need and given them my right to help them improve their current situation.
