Essay / COSMETICS - 664
Large cosmetic brands like: Mac, Maybelline, Avon and Clinique are bombarding the market. It is reported that "about 1,282 tubes of lipstick and 2,055 jars of skin care products are sold every minute" ("Beauty in the Mind and Wallet of the Beholder," Minnesota Daily Online, March 7, 2001 ). Everyone wants to own these products to look beautiful. But do cosmetics enhance your beauty? According to the Encarta dictionary, cosmetics can be defined as “a beautifying substance: a preparation that is applied to the face or body to make it more attractive, for example a lipstick (often used in the plural)”. There are many differing views on whether or not people should wear cosmetics. People should not apply cosmetic products on their body or face (thesis statement) because it does not enhance your inner beauty but covers your natural God-given beauty and it is considered a sin to hide this blessing according to the Christians. It is ethically wrong to wear makeup, people can get the wrong idea about you if you wear too many cosmetics, especially men, and some cosmetics when applied have side effects such as acne that can last a long time. (Argument Points) Firstly, using cosmetics as a beautification tool does not enhance your inner beauty but only hides the natural God-given appearance. Low-esteem people may have the impression that they are not beautiful depending on the social context and may apply cosmetic products to camouflage this “flaw” in their opinion. However, they do not realize that by wearing cosmetics they are committing a sin according to Christians. The Bible addresses the issue of wearing cosmetics being a sin which is addressed in Jeremiah 4:30, verse 30 which states that “…though you adorn yourselves with ornaments of gold, even though you praise…. . middle of paper... ...ro, an eye cosmetic from Nigeria — Boston, Massachusetts, 2011”. Acne is the most common side effect associated with cosmetics. Studies conducted by Brown University also show that "using oily cosmetics can also lead to acne because they clog cell follicles and encourage bacterial growth." In conclusion, people should not use cosmetic products as it is considered a sin according to the Bible; people can have negative ideas about you and can sometimes lead to rape. Finally, cosmetics have side effects that can last a long time.1) http://rcg.org/books/tthbm.html2) http://brown.edu/Student_Services/Health_Services/Health_Education/common_college_health_issues/acne.php3) http : //www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6130a3.htm4) http://listcrux.com/top-10-harmful-effects-of-using-cosmetics/5) http://home.uchicago . edu/~ahkissel/papers/cosmetics.html
