  • Essay / The Philippines and Spanish Colonization - 1697

Section A: Survey PlanThe main focus of this study will be the colonization process of the Philippines and how the Spanish colonized the Philippines, focusing mainly on the customs and cultures. The pre-colonized and post-colonized Philippines will be discussed and compared to each other to determine the degree of change that has occurred in Filipino culture. The analysis of the information will explain how events following colonization erased certain aspects of Filipino culture. Most of the information provided will primarily be a collection of scholarly works describing Philippine colonization from a contemporary perspective, such as Dolan and Francia. The only known history of the Philippines is the Laguna Copperplate Inscription, but even that is outdated as the estimated date of its inscription is in the 900s (tomorrow). This poses problems for modern contemporaries such as Dolan and Francia, as the information provided is biased. The statistics of modern Philippines will be used to show the impact of the Spanish in modern times. Section B: Summary of the Survey Until the mid-1500s, the Philippine islands maintained their autonomy. Before the conquest of the Philippines by the Spanish, the Philippines had its own form of government. In the precolonial era of the Philippines, barangays were spread throughout the country (Rodell 17). These were essentially small groupings of colonies spread across the Philippines. Each barangay was headed by a chief called a datu. Barangays often remained constrained to themselves, although they allied themselves with other barangays and this decision was often based on the relationships of the relatives of previous barangay leaders (Rodell 28).
