  • Essay / Paper - 752

Enchanted written by Ueda Akinari follows a young man haunted by a demon disguised as a woman. In analyzing this story, there are important points about the roles of each gender, the relationship between the sexes, and the importance of meeting social expectations during this time in Japan. A man must be strong, robust and hardworking. There is little need for education. For example, Taro is the eldest son of Oya no Takesuke and is a well-trained fisherman. His father taught him to be a fisherman and he is constantly impressed by him. He even participates in the management of the family business. Taro wakes up at sunrise to supervise the fishermen of the family business. Taro is previously introduced to Toyo-o to show what a man should be. Unlike his brother, Toyo-o, who is what a man should not be. He is an effeminate individual who prefers to study rather than devote his time to the family business. The education he sought was worthless in his father's eyes. Oya no Takesuke saw Toyo-o as nothing more than an obstacle and would have given his horrible son to another family if he hadn't been so ashamed of what the family might think of him because of his son. Oya no Takesuke also believes himself to be "fickle and irresponsible", even irresponsible when it comes to money. So, like all good fathers, Oya no Takesuke allows him to be whatever he wants, as long as it only burdens Taro. Toyo-o is often seen as young and handsome. It is her beauty that attracts the attention of the handsome Manago, who is actually a demon with supernatural powers, and his effeminate quality and lack of discipline is what makes him weak to Manago's charm. During this period, equality between men and women was unknown. Women had their own social role... middle of paper ... and never mention any mourning for her. However, Toyo-o "suffers no ill effects" and lives a long and healthy life. Tomiko was punished even though Toyo-o shows weakness throughout the story. He has learned of Manago's supernatural nature, but still maintains a relationship with her. Just by being a man, he somehow escapes the harmful effects of the event. While an innocent young girl dies without any involvement of her own will. In conclusion, by analyzing Bewitched we can learn a lot about the treatment of women and what is expected of each gender. This is for a man to be a man, he should never give in to women, no matter how beautiful they are. A man who is not hardworking and masculine is worthless. Women who go against what they should be are punished. The moral of the story is that to be happy and live a meaningful life, people must conform to their society..
