Physical education should be made compulsory to defeat the growing epidemic of childhood obesity. Currently, in the United States of America, the only state in the country that requires physical education is Illinois. (Friedin, 2014) The current percentage of childhood obesity in America is staggering. With more than 31% of all adults and 28% of children above the obesity threshold, something must be done to prevent further increases. There is a 63% reduction in extracurricular activities after school, which is believed to be due to the scourge of obesity which is affecting all of the country's youth. (Morales, 2012) One in three children in the United States are overweight or obese because they were never taught proper fitness techniques and activities. They don't get enough support and aren't shown new, creative ways to get active. Gym class doesn't have to be embarrassing, but rather a fun way to learn about a healthy lifestyle..
