Melancholy in HamletMelancholy has caused many people to despise the world and themselves, driving themselves to suicide or treating their lives as if they had no meaning. Hamlet is a lonely, melancholy soul who does not think highly of women or his own life. Melancholy forms the basis of Hamlet's character, from his arrival in Denmark until the death of Ophelia. Suicidal thoughts have arisen throughout the play, beginning with the news of old Hamlet's death and manifesting in his soliloquy "To be or not to be." Throughout the play, Hamlet has various opinions and points of view, which show how he disrespects women, especially the one he should love the most, his mother. All these character traits of Hamlet are well described by Shakespeare in each line spoken by Hamlet. These traits show the reader who the real Hamlet is, at a time when Hamlet himself now knows who he is. Melancholy is the first emotion we see in Hamlet. Upon his arrival in Denmark, Hamlet receives the tragic news of his father's death. Upon his arrival, he realizes that Denmark has changed in ways that he does not like. "It is a weedless garden that grows to the seed. The coarse and gross things in nature simply possess it" (I; ii; 135-137), is a reference to the transformed Denmark to which Hamlet is no longer more familiar. Melancholy is also evident when he realizes that Ophelia has died. When Hamlet says "You don't cry? You don't fight? You don't fast? You don't tear yourself apart? You don't drink too much? Eat a crocodile? I won't. Do you come here to whine? To surpass me by jumping into his graveā€ (V; I; 252-254), he means that he would do anything to be with the woman he loves at that moment, and that he would be. "buried quickly with her" (V; I; 255...... middle of paper ......rs and is not afraid to speak his mind. Although many have turned against the world, Hamlet is not one to give up without a fight in fact has a lonely and melancholy soul, which makes him contemplate suicide and pushes him to lash out at the opposite sex. Hamlet's sadness is evident when. he arrives in Denmark and also appears when his true love, Ophelia, dies When situations do not go as planned, the lack of respect towards his mother is evident when Hamlet says what he thinks about his mother's marriage. Hamlet has a way of confusing his attributes with his flaws, which makes him indecisive about his life. He was also envious of others, even though he was the one others could have envied. The play taught readers that they should fight for what they believe in and not give up until they have achieved their ultimate goal..
