  • Essay / My Personal Musical Interests - 1263

Isolation caused me to miss most of the broader aspects of the surrounding musical culture, until late college; most of my exposure came just from background noise and my personal interests. My sisters were 90s girls, so I gravitated toward backstreet boys, while my dad grew up in the 60s and 70s, so I also loved listening to people like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd . As I entered middle school, I wanted to emulate these rock artists and took guitar lessons. Once I started playing, my interests in classic rock eventually split into two directions: the roots of classic rock led me to join a jazz band, and the fusion of pop and rock classic led me to my personal exploration of alternative rock. Until now, my personal preferences mainly influenced the music I listened to and what I considered "good" and "cool", and outside culture had not yet affected my preferences.
