Essay / The Horrors of the September 11 Terrorist Attacks - 636
The September 11, 2001 attacks had been planned since the mid-1900s, just after World War II. The events leading up to September 11, 2001 ended in tragedy. On September 11, 2001, two planes crashed into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. Flight 175, an American Airlines plane, was hijacked that morning and crashed into the North Tower. Shortly after the first attack, another plane from American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the South Tower. The same day, another plane, Flight 77, crashed into the west side of the Pentagon in Washington, DC. Earlier in the day, Flight 93 was hijacked and headed to the White House, but the passengers aboard the plane took over and crashed near a town called Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The terrorist plots of September 11, 2001 became the most significant attack on American soil to date. September 11, 2001 was seen as the attack on Islamic fascism and democracy. (Carr 293) The plan to carry out the September 11 attacks was beneficial to Bin Laden through Khalid Sheik Mohammed, his informant. (Carr 298). The planes were carefully chosen for them. They chose a Tuesday because the flights were generally calm. (Stewart 51). Before the September 11 attacks, the hijackers all took flying lessons in the United States, which cost them $250 each time. (Stewart 53). Back when they were taking flying lessons, some say the hijackers hid the weapons in the airport. Most people say they received help from within (Stewart 51). A month before the September 11 attacks, Bin Laden told the United States that he was planning attacks against us. He says the United States is a place of wickedness and corruption. Bin Laden declared that “it was a duty for Muslims to kill Americans” (Stewart 49). On September 15, 2001, Newsweek reported: "F...... middle of paper... New York shopping malls." Other hijackers crashed a plane into the Pentagon, and the passengers who picked up the hijackers on Flight 11 crashed another plane into a field. Years later, the United States sent Navy Seals to bin Laden's home to kill him on May 2, 2011, which took out another terrorist, but that was only part of the war bin Laden started.
