  • Essay / Gun Malfunctions in the Military - 552

Our group really only disagreed on what topic to discuss. On the first day, Alberto and I tackled the topic of gun malfunctions in the military, while the two girls in our group chose the one that involved crime scene photos. After Friday's group discussion, I talked to Alberto and he told me he was still going to take care of gun malfunctions in the military, so I was still going to do that too. The girls thought it would be too hard to find anything about it and honestly didn't even want to try. So I found myself once again in a group in which no one was able to agree or even move forward in the discussion. I think dysfunctions should be reported publicly. If the government is so afraid of the enemy getting information about its dysfunctions, I think they should do something instead of just complaining. I really didn't realize until now how many people complained about their guns malfunctioning during the war. In Vietnam, it was recorded that around 80% of soldiers' weapons malfunctioned in the heat of battle. This could be a major problem, because in Iraq it was even worse. These malfunctions could mean life or death for soldiers. Malfunctions are not only jamming of cartridges, but also overheating and the presence of blood and dust inside. I think the media should be able to talk about it. As Americans, we should be allowed to know what is happening during wartime. Mothers want to know why their babies are dying, and it is their right to know. It might even spark someone else's interest in helping advance the technology to avoid these malfunctions if the media publicizes it. Or if the government really doesn't want this disclosed, they can always change the weapons you use and the enemy won't know you changed weapons. Honestly, I don't believe the enemy can really do anything with the information about these malfunctions, but they are advancing their own technology, but at the same time America should try to advance theirs. The Government should therefore want to publicize these dysfunctions in the media. Maybe they should write an article themselves explaining why they need bright young minds to help them create better weapons and also help soldiers stay protected..
