Essay / Poetic Style of Sylvia Plath - 1101
Sylvia Plath was born on October 27, 1932 in Boston, Massachusetts. Sylvia Plath was one of the greatest poets of her time, but she was very troubled and struggled with mental health issues throughout her life. Plath's poetic style is known to be confessional, meaning: "Private experiences and feelings regarding death, trauma, depression, and relationships" were addressed in this type of poetry, often from autobiographical manner (Poets.org). As a young child, Plath began writing in journals. Sylvia Plath had a lot going for her, she was popular, intelligent and had earned a scholarship to Smith College, but what lay beneath the surface was a dark, depressed young girl. During her freshman year of college, she attempted suicide for the first time. Plath was able to recover from her deep depression, and in 1956 she married Ted Hughes (Poethunter.com). At first their love was strong and the two writers wrote many poems and stories together. In 1961, Hughes and Plath rented their flat in Chalcot Square to a woman named Assia Wevill. Plath discovered a year later that her husband, Ted Hughes, was having an affair with Assia Wevill. The couple separated in September and Plath once again attempted suicide (New York Times). Plath decided to return to London and thought the best way to get revenge on her ex-husband was to write about him. During the winter of 1962-1963, Sylvia's life hit rock bottom. She was a single mother raising two children, sick with the flu and strapped for money. She stayed at home all day, writing poem after poem. These poems were darker and deeper than ever. In January 1963, the winter was brutal and his depression only worsened. Plath put her children to sleep, stuffed a napkin... in the middle of a paper... at the age where a person can hold a grudge forever and have it ruin their life, as was the case with Sylvia Plath . The song we chose for our presentation is I'm OK by Christina Aguilera. This song is an emotional song, about a girl who grew up with an abusive father. The song connects perfectly with the poem "Daddy" because they both talk about how they admired their father, but he was a mean man, and the song and poem both get angry and angry against their father. In the song I'm OK, Christina Aguilera says: "Daddy, you don't understand the wrong you've done. For you, it's just a memory, but for me, he still lives with bruises that fade, father, but the pain remains the same. and I still remember how you kept me so, so scared. This line shows that the relationship she had with her father was abusive and emotionally traumatic. The pain Plath's father inflicted on her lasted a lifetime.
