Why is security at mega-events like the Olympics essential? Please provide three different examples of security issues at the Olympic Games. Over the years, it has become increasingly important for large mega-events to have the most advanced forms of surveillance on the market. During the recent Rio Olympics, Rio deployed 100,000 security personnel and used more than 3,000 vehicles each year. In Rio, they even used airships, which gave an aerial view of the city. Safety is important at these events because these events bring many people together in one place. When the mega-event is a sport, it also brings an element of competition, which results in different and opposing points of view, and all of this leads to conflict. At the 1972 Munich Olympics, on September 5, a Palestinian terrorist group called Black September murdered eleven Israeli athletes, coaches and a West German police officer. Five Palestinian terrorists were also killed. The scale of this massacre was heightened because it was the first Olympic game to be filmed on television, so everyone in the world was informed fairly quickly of this horrific tragedy. The terrible televised event also allowed the terrorists to see where the snipers were positioned.
