A pharmacist must also be able to resolve conflicts and identify communication barriers when dealing with patients. When most people think about communication, they tend to focus only on speaking. It is essential to remember that nonverbal communication is a key element of effective communication. While speech can express ideas, nonverbal communication can convey emotions. This can include gestures, facial expressions and body posture. It displays our most intimate thoughts and feelings and can be very difficult to hide. What makes nonverbal communication tricky is that it can be interpreted differently by each person. For a pharmacist to be effective in nonverbal communication, it is essential that they use verbal and nonverbal cues together to interpret the complete message. Effective listening is an additional skill that every pharmacist should master. Effective listening includes active listening. It is a process of not only hearing what is said, but also processing and interpreting the message to understand its meaning in its entirety. Pharmacists can demonstrate effective listening to patients by providing feedback to confirm that they understand the patient's message. Pharmacists face new problems every day and must be able to take appropriate action to resolve these conflicts. Conflict resolution is being able to successfully find solutions to resolve a conflict.
