Essay / Cabin Community - 1845
The average family is able to combat the most extreme weather conditions nature has to offer with a roof over their head, whether it's freezing cold , stifling heat or pouring rain. In Sacramento, as well as across the state and country, many homeless people are forced to battle these harsh weather conditions with little more than a thin tarp for protection (Kim). A group based in the Sacramento area is determined to put an end to this problem for good. The Safe Ground Sacramento website states that it "is a nonprofit, charitable organization whose goal is to create a model community of first-stage housing and transitional services" ("Who We Are" ). Safe Ground Sacramento's proposed model for this community includes "individual sleeping cabins, a community center, kitchen and dining areas, as well as outreach services for mental health, substance abuse, general counseling for health and nutrition and job search skills training” (“Who We Are”). Instead of traditional homeless shelters or makeshift tents, Safe Ground's proposed model calls for an actual roof over the homeless's heads. Despite this noble idea, it encountered strong resistance from the local government. This cabin community failed to get past the Sacramento City Council, which rejected more than half a dozen potential sites (Creamer). Community Shelter Building Homeless Project to be commissioned by Sacramento City Council due to its structural benefits, ability to be portable, and potential to be a permanent solution for getting homeless people out from the street. Above all, city council members must understand the structural advantages offered by the shack model compared to current tents or shelters used by the homeless. Ironically, the Safe Ground is in the middle of paper...... Push the effort to house the homeless. " American City and Country, August 1, 2006: n. pag. eLibrary. Web. November 14. 2013.
