  • Essay / The Face Behind the Truth in Cinema - 1267

Oscar Wild once said, “The truth is rarely pure and never simple” and he's right. But no matter the outcome or how complicated the truth, we will always strive to find it. The concept of truth is no stranger to film documentaries, and one filmmaker who was certainly aware of this was Dziga Vertov. During the 1920s, Vertov created a newsreel series to promote the concept of "Kinopravda", which in English means "Film Truth". Unfortunately, Vertov was ahead of his time and this concept disappeared on the path of filmmakers. It wasn't until the 1960s that other filmmakers around the world again recognized the importance of truth. Two movements aimed at revealing the truth of life are emerging in different parts of the world, Direct Cinema in North America and Cinema Vérité in France. Although both have the same goal, their approaches to obtaining the truth make them completely different. Cinéma Vérité's approach gave filmmakers a chance to manipulate and distort reality by participating and observing at the same time, while Direct Cinemas' approach was strictly observational, and there is no better way to discover the truth than to observe without interfering. Truth is often confused and classified as one movement, because in both movements the filmmakers play the role of observers to discover the truth, they are very different and have different approaches to finding the truth. Cinéma Direct filmmakers would likely take a passive, objective approach, while Cinéma Vérité filmmakers would take a participatory, subjective approach in their search for truth. Some argue that Direct Cinema's approach is dishonest, because their subjects have an attitude...... middle of paper...... f truth when they interview their subjects. In the film “Chronicle of a Summer” we can see how Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin appear in the frame several times, their participation in the film was clear, especially because they gave biased opinions and asked subjective questions.
