Homer is a well-known author who is credited with shaping Greek culture. As Homer wrote, he called upon the muse who would help him spread knowledge through his works. These muses were known for providing inspiration that would guide writers such as Homer in writing great works. Two of his famous pieces are poems called The Iliad and The Odyssey which, in their own right, are considered some of the greatest ancient Greek epics ever written. These literary works greatly influenced Greek culture and presented themes that people can relate to today. In The Odyssey, a Greek hero, Odysseus, returns home after the Trojan War. Throughout this long journey, Odysseus meets many people who welcome him out of courtesy and hospitality. In this text, the recurring theme of hospitality was given great importance and is also present in today's society. Xenia was common in Greek culture; however, changes within society have made this form of hospitality less prevalent today. Xenia, or the concept of hospitality, is the main theme present in the Odyssey. In the poem, Odysseus tries to find his wife and son, Penelope and Telemachus. However, his journey lasts for almost twenty years as he encounters many obstacles on his way. During his journey, the people he meets are almost always ready to help him. An example of hospitality can be seen through the actions of King Alkinoos, who provided Odysseus with a place to eat and rest. King Alkinoos did this out of pure kindness and asked nothing of Odysseus except the story of his long journey.
