Sarty is intimidated but loyal to his father. Abner is not liked by everyone except his family, even the family is not liked by the townspeople. Immediately after being kicked out and preparing to leave, a boy hissed at Snopes calling them a "barn burner!" (Faulkner 189) revealing Snopes' reputation to local townspeople. As previously quoted, Sarty compared Abner to a wasp, which stings and harasses for a moment and Sarty is happy that his father is away from
