Essay / United States - 1094
America. Once a democracy, this is no longer the case.I. IntroductionA. Research questions:1. With all the recent changes in the US government, can it still be called a democracy? The United States has not been a democracy for some time now. In reality, it is more of an oligarchy: between lobbying and electoral campaigns, it is generally the party with the deepest pockets that takes the lead.2. Thesis Statement: Recent changes in government policy and bills that have been quietly passed by the Obama administration have paved the way for a dictatorial government. The rights of American citizens have been gradually stripped away to the point where Obama simply has to declare a state of emergency, which will dissolve the current government, making him America's first dictator. I will support these statements and discuss the impact they will have once these events occur.II. Theory: “Dictatorship arises naturally from democracy, and the most aggravated form of tyranny and slavery from the most extreme freedom. » – Plato [In a direct democracy] the appearance of government can become more democratic; but the soul which animates it will be more oligarchic. The machine will be enlarged, but the fewer and fewer the springs by which its movements are directed, the more secret they will be. — James Madison The United States is not a democracy in its current state. In reality, it is an oligarchy run by a system in which economic elites and organized groups representing various business interests have a significant impact on government policy, while ordinary citizens have little or no influence. This claim was proven in a recent study by researchers from Princeton and Northwestern University. Some would go that far...... middle of paper ......dows is another terrorist attack, perhaps something on the scale of 9/11. What is interesting is that once the government is ready to dissolve the facade of democracy, there is really nothing stopping it from engineering the disaster itself and blaming it on a bogeyman ( terrorists/war on terrorism).III. HistoryA. America is Transitioning to a Totalitarian Government (10 Steps)Naomi Wolf published a book and created a documentary describing ten steps. These ten steps are steps that must be taken by any would-be dictator in order to destroy constitutional freedoms and have proven to be very accurate throughout history, from Hitler to Pinochet and beyond. She claims that Bush, and then Obama, are using proven tactics to shut down an open society. It also suggests that America is much further along this path than most people think..
