Essay / Arabian Nights - 1479
The Arden production of The Arabian Nights should have included a story or two about a Demon like those included in Husain Haddawy's novel. By including these types of stories, they could incorporate magic and demons into the play. There are many interesting ways to depict magic and the appearance of demons. The story of the merchant and the demon in the novel tells the story of this rich merchant who travels from town to town selling goods. On one trip, he rode for several days, then stopped to rest under a walnut tree. He took something to eat from his bag and started throwing date stones left and right. Then this old demon came and took out his sword to kill the merchant. Asking the demon why he wanted to kill him, the demon replied that the merchant killed his son when he threw the date stone and it hit him on the head. The merchant began to cry and mourn his family, his wife and his children. (Haddawy p.18) He then began to recite verses and after he finished and stopped crying, the demon repeated that he must kill the merchant as the merchant had killed his son. The merchant then begged the demon to give him time to say goodbye to his family, his wife and his children. The demon agreed to give the man a year to return only after the merchant swore like God as his witness. When the merchant returned home and told his wife and children about his problems, they all cried. He then wrote his will, divided his property, fulfilled his obligations to the people, left legacies and gifts, distributed alms and hired reciters to read parts of the Quran in his house. Then he summoned legal witnesses and, in their presence, freed his slaves and slaves, divided their property shares among his older children, appointed guardians for his young ones, and gave his wife her share in accordance with his marriage contract. (Haddawy p. 19) At the end of the year, the merchant bid a tearful farewell and returned to the orchard exactly one year later. While he was waiting for the demon under the tree, an old man passed by with a deer. and asked him why he was sitting in the orchard which is full of demons and devils.
