  • Essay / Obsessive compulsive disorder in the film as good as...

The film shows how serious and damaging this disorder can be, but it also gives hope for recovery. As the film draws to a close, you can see that some of Melvin's major obsessions and compulsions have weakened. For example, he forgets to lock his door, he becomes more physical with Carol (suggesting that his fear of contamination has lessened), and at the very end of the film he walks over cracks in the sidewalk. This improvement in Melvin's condition may be associated with correct use of medications, therapy/CBT, and breaks in his routine. The presence of Carol and her neighbor Simon help to shake up his routine, which ends up being very beneficial for the treatment of his OCD. I think this is a pretty accurate representation of how OCD is treated and gives hope to those trying to treat their own OCD. But I will say that it is a movie after all, so it's a bit of a glorified and too perfect cure for OCD. There will definitely be more ups and downs in a real situation. Overall, I think the movie As Far As It Can Be done a great job presenting OCD. It shows the many difficulties someone with OCD may face, but also shows hope for recovery and living a normal life.
