  • Essay / Shadowing Experience Essay - 1049

I shadowed a primary care physician (PCP), cardiologist, and general surgeon in Little Rock. I was introduced to triage, monitoring patients' diets, and transitioning from diagnosis to treatment. These experiences exposed me to some of the immense responsibilities of physicians. Through my experience shadowing Dr. Richard Jackson, I learned the need for compassion in a physician and that it is as important as medical procedures. I saw him put a colostomy bag on a seven-year-old girl diagnosed with colon cancer. When she recovered from the operation, he noticed that she was sad and afraid of the colostomy bag. He comforted her by telling her the stories of many other children who had also had colostomy bags at a young age and ended his conversation by making funny faces at her. It made her happy and her smile expressed the joy and beauty of being alive. This taught me that a patient's emotional health is as important as their physical health, and that both factors must be considered when providing care. This shadowing experience allowed me to see what it means to be a practicing physician and reinforced my desire to be a physician
